STAMFORD, CT– The Connecticut Whale of the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) has announced that Jessica Koizumi will be the team’s first captain and Kaleigh Fratkin will serve as the Whale’s first assistant captain.
Fratkin was an assistant captain for the Boston University Terriers during the 2013-14 season, her senior season at BU. Koizumi was captain of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs during her junior and senior seasons. She also served as a captain for the Boston Blades of the CWHL before coming over to the NWHL this season.
In addition to playing for the Whale, Koizumi also currently serves as an assistant coach for the Yale University women’s ice hockey team.
“Through coaching several years at a rebuilding Division I program, I have learned how important it is to have a strong leadership core,” says Koizumi. “We've had some unbelievable captains at Yale that have helped change our culture including current Whale teammate, Tara Tomimoto, who was captain for me two seasons ago.”
