Defense Prevails as SLU and Colgate Skate to 0-0 Tie

St. Lawrence University first-year goaltender Lucy Morgan made 22 saves to post her first collegiate shutout, but she was matched by Colgate's Liz Auby, who stopped 33 shots as the Saints and Raiders skated to a scoreless tie in a women's hockey game at SUNY Canton's Roos House Ice Rink on Saturday night.

The Saints held Colgate scoreless on four power plays, including 1:23 of a 5-on-3 advantage late in the second period.

"What a great game," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells '92. "Chances back and forth and saves at each end all night. Both teams left it all on the ice. Hard, fast-paced and clean. This was a very good weekend for us. We really started to see what we can do and it's exciting."

St. Lawrence's Maggie McLaughlin skated hard to create a number of opportunities for herself. In the first period, she created a turnover in the defensive zone then pushed the puck through a defender's legs to create a breakaway, but was denied by Auby's glove. McLaughlin had two more chances in the final 30 seconds of overtime, one on a 2-on-1 after the Saints won a defensive zone faceoff, and another just before time expired, but Auby was able to stop both scoring bids to preserve the tie.

St. Lawrence defenseman Kristen Guerriero hit the far post with less than 30 seconds to play in the second period on a shot from the left point.

The Saints also made a number of excellent defensive plays throughout the game. Claire Dudley broke up a Colgate 3-on-1 with a diving poke check on a cross ice pass halfway through the second, and Amanda Butterfield created a turnover in her own end and iced the puck early in the Raiders' 5-on-3 advantage.

St. Lawrence held a 33-22 advantage in shots on goal, including a 4-1 edge in the overtime period.

St. Lawrence moved to 4-4-3 overall, 1-1-1 ECAC Hockey, while Colgate is now 6-5-2, 1-2-1.

The Saints will face Syracuse next Saturday at War Memorial Arena at 2 p.m. Please note there will be no live stream of the game available.
