Clarkson and Cornell Battle to 1-1 Tie

A top 10 battle between the 2019 ECAC Hockey Tournament Champions and last year's league regular-season winners, Clarkson and Cornell, ended in a 1-1 tie at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Ranked 5/6th in the national polls, Clarkson extended its unbeaten stretch to eight games (5-0-3) and moved to 8-1-3 on the season and to 3-0-1 in conference play.

The third-ranked Big Red remain unbeaten on the year with a 5-0-1 overall record and a 3-0-1 conference mark.

Scoreless through 40 minutes, the ECAC Hockey powers traded goals early in the third period for all the scoring in the 65-minute contest.

The Big Red opened the scoring at 3:59 when Izzy Daniel took a pass in the slot from Maddie Milles and fired a quick shot past Clarkson sophomore netminder Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, QUE) to break the scoreless tie. Jamie Bourbonnais also assisted.

The Knights did not waste much time in tying the game.

While on a 26-second two-man advantage, junior right wing Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) picked up a puck along the left boards, skated to the bottom of the circle and sent a low wrist shot behind Cornell goaltender Lindsay Browning at 6:24 for a power-play tally and her 11th goal of the season. Senior center Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MAN) and freshman defenseman Stephanie Markowski (Edmonton, ALB) picked up assists.

Cornell came out strong to start the game and outshot the Green and Gold 8-0 through the first 10 minutes. Clarkson had the better of the play in second period with a 10-7 shot advantage. Both teams had seven shots in the third frame. The Bid Red held a 4-3 edge in shots in the five-minute overtime.

Both Coulombe and Browning finished with 28 saves.

Clarkson was 1-of-3 on the power play and shut down both of the Big Red's man-advantage opportunities.

Clarkson breaks from league play next weekend, hosting Mercyhurst in a weekend series at Cheel.
