Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) scored both Clarkson goals and sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, QUE) posted 23 saves as the Golden Knights won their fourth straight game with a 2-1 victory over Colgate at Cheel Arena on Friday night.
Ranked 5/6th in the national polls, Clarkson extended its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) and improved to 8-1-2 overall and to 3-0-0 in ECAC Hockey. The Knights host third-ranked Cornell on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Clarkson outshot Colgate (6-5-1, 1-2) 30-24, both Coulombe and Raiders' goaltender Liz Auby had strong games between the pipes in the one-goal contest. Auby finished with 28 saves.
After a scoreless opening 20 minute, the Knights struck first with an unassisted goal by Giguere midway through the second period. The junior right wing won a loose puck along the boards, got behind the Colgate defense and fired a shot on goal. Auby made the initial save, but Giguere corralled the rebound and flipped a shot off the Colgate goaltender that bounced into the net at 10:03.
Giguere connected again just over two minutes later. All alone in slot, Giguere took a centering pass from the left boards by senior linemate, center Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice Czech Rep.) and fired in a low wrist shot for her 10th goal of the season at 12:24 to complete her eighth career multiple-goal game. Freshman left wing Gabrielle David (Drummondville, QUE) also assisted.
With just 17 seconds remaining in the middle frame, Colgate's Tanner Gates intercepted a Clarkson clearing attempt and tallied on a shot from the right circle to put the visitors on the scoreboard, spoiling Coulombe's shutout bid.
The Raiders outshot the Green and Gold 10-9 in the third period, but could not come up with the tying score.
Colgate was 0-of-3 on the power play, while Clarkson was 0-of-2.
