Clarkson University scored two goals in a 16 second span in the third period to turn a deficit into a lead and the No. 5 Golden Knights defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) 5-4 in an ECAC Hockey contest at Houston Field House. Clarkson improves to 7-1-2 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey, while the Engineers fall to 0-8-1 and 0-2-0 despite registering a season-high for goals in a game.
Trailing 3-2 nearly three quarters of the way through the final period, Clarkson's sustained pressure paid off when junior Elizabeth Giguere scored on a rebound of an Ella Shelton shot at 14:38. Junior Kristy Pidgeon then put the visitors ahead at 14:54 when she skated down the left side and slipped a shot along the ice and into the far corner for Clarkson's first lead of the afternoon. Lauren Bernard and Rhyen McGill, who also had an assist on the game-tying goal, had the helpers for the Golden Knights, who had 39 shots attempts in the third period with 25 on goal.
Senior Blake Orosz gave the Engineers a 3-2 lead at 3:35 of the third when she buried a shot from the bottom left of the right faceoff circle. Madeleine Burnett sent the puck toward the goal, but it deflected off of teammate Sabrina Repaci and ended up on Orosz's stick. The goal was her second of the game and third on the weekend.
Rensselaer jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring on each of its first two shots, the first coming from freshman Julia Blitz from the slot at 1:33 and the second from Orosz on the power play at 3:11. Burnett and Blitz had the assists on RPI's second goal, which led to a Clarkson timeout.
Freshman Gabrielle David pulled the visitors to within one at 6:42 and then tied the game with a shorthanded goal just under four minutes later and that is how the first period ended.
The Engineers regained the lead at 14:57 of the second period when freshman Sarah Bukvic collected her own rebound and scored from just outside the crease, but Shelton answered with a power play goal less than two minutes later (16:42).
Shelton (1 goal, 2 assists) was one of five Golden Knights with multiple points, joined by David (2 goals, 1 assist), Giguere (1 goal, 1 assist), McGill (2 assists) and Michaela Pejzlova (2 assists). Marie-Pier Coulombe made four saves over the final 25:03 to earn the win in goal.
Freshman Ena Nystrom stopped 44 shots for RPI, including 12 in the second period and 23 in the third. Orosz (2 goals), Burnett (2 assists), Blitz (1 goal, 1 assist) and Sabrina Repaci (2 assists) each had multiple points for the Engineers, who return to action on Friday at Brown University (6pm).
Clarkson plays next on Friday at home against Colgate University (6pm).
