PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team was defeated by Quinnipiac, 4-2, on Saturday at Meehan Auditorium. The Bobcats held off a late push by the Bears as freshmen Lizzy Gross(Scarborough, Maine) and Shay Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) scored in the second and third period, respectively.
"We had moments of strong hockey, but overall, our consistency was not where it needed to be to get the win," said head coach Carisa Wahlig.
Quinnipiac (10-16-4, 7-9-2 ECAC) took a 2-0 lead after the opening frame with a power-play goal by Zoe Boyd at 4:51 and a score from Kenzie Prater at 17:21. A total of five penalties were called in the period with the Bobcats 1-for-2 on the power play while the Bears were 0-for-3.
Taylor House increased Quinnipiac's lead to three at 8:36 before Gross gave Brown (5-18-2, 2-14-2 ECAC) some momentum with her seventh tally of the year coming on the power play. Junior Veronica Alois(Andover, Mass.) and senior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) assisted the score.
Brown was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill in the second and went 1-for-1 on the power play.
The Bobcats got their lead back up to three (4-1) scoring in the opening minute of the third (Randi Marcon, 00:21). Brown battled back as Maloney netted her fourth of the season at 7:27 and was setup by junior Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) and freshman Tina Paolillo (East Haven, Conn.).
Brown went with the empty net at 16:16 as it gained a power play but Quinnipiac would fight off the infraction and prevent the Bears from getting closer.
Both teams were 1-for-5 on the power play overall while the Bobcats outshot the Bears, 31-22.
Freshman Hayley Kliczko (Niles, Ill.) finished the contest with 27 saves while Abbie Ives notched 20 saves for QU.
Following the game, Brown met with the United Arab Emirates Women's National Team who was in attendance. "It was great having the UAE Women's National Team here to witness a Division I game and meet the players after the game," said Wahlig.
Brown will next close out its road slate on Friday, Feb. 15 at No. 6 Cornell and on Saturday, Feb. 16 at No. 10 Colgate. Friday's game versus the Big Red begins at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's contest will start at 3:00 p.m.
