Fast start helps propel RPI past Dartmouth

TROY, N.Y. – Senior blueliner Josefine Hansen recorded a goal and two assists to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Dartmouth College, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 12-12-5 overall (9-7-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Green drop to 4-19-1 (3-14-0 ECACHockey).

Dartmouth scored the game's first goal at 10:10 of the opening frame, when freshman Sara McClanahan (Wayzata, MN/Minnesota Jr. Whitecaps) backhanded home her sixth goal of the year from right between the circles. The power play tally drew assists from junior defensemen Bailee Brekke (Oxford, OH/CGA Prep Eagles) and Sydney Hill (Redvers, SK/Warner Hockey School).

The Engineers then struck for a pair of goals, just nine seconds apart, to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Kendra Farole(Irvine, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) flipped the puck off the stick of Dartmouth senior Christine Honor (Mississauga, ON/Etobicoke PWHL) and in from behind the net, before freshman Lilli Friis-Hansen (Lyngby, Denmark/Gentoft) netted her first collegiate goal off the ensuing faceoff.

A shorthanded goal by sophomore Lauren Severson (Rockford, IL/Madison Capitals) pushed the RPI lead to 3-1 at 6:15 of the second, taking a cross-ice feed from freshman Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) for her fifth of the season.

The hosts pushed their advantage to 4-1 just 45 seconds in the third, as junior Blake Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) chipped home her team-leading 12th goal of the year after a shot by Capelle was stopped by Big Green senior netminder Shannon Ropp (West Bloomfield, MI/Honeybaked U19). Orosz corralled the loose puck and flipped it into the top left corner of the net in one motion.

Hansen (Copenhagen, Denmark/Shattuck St. Mary's) potted RPI's fifth goal at 12:58 of the third, after intercepting a breakout pass at the Dartmouth blue line. After being denied at the left side of the net, Hansen carried the puck around to the right circle, before beating Ropp five-hole for her fourth of the year.

Freshman Gabby Billing (Corcoran, MN/Minnesota Jr. Whitecaps) collected a late shorthanded goal for the Big Green to cap the scoring in the contest. The unassisted marker was her second of the season.

RPI extended its unbeaten streak to four games (2-0-2) over Dartmouth, which is the Engineers' longest such streak in series history. Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) finished with 30 saves on the night, leaving her 10 shy of the NCAA Division I career mark of 3,809, which is held by Brianna McLaughlin, a 2009 graduate of Robert Morris University. Honor made four saves, before giving way to Ropp (0-2-0), who had 13 stops.

The Engineers return to the ice tomorrow afternoon, when they host Harvard University at 3pm. Dartmouth visits Union College at 3pm.
