RPI captures second Mayor's Cup in win over Union

ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Lauren Severson recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Union College, on Tuesday afternoon at the Times Union Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 11-10-5 overall (8-5-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Dutchwomen drop to 3-21-2 (1-12-1 ECAC Hockey).

Severson (Rockford, IL/Madison Capitals) opened the scoring at 18:30 of the first period, when she fit a tight-angle shot post Union junior goaltender Amelia Murray (McHenry, IL) for her fourth goal of the season. Carrying the puck up the left wing boards, she beat Murray inside the right post for the go-ahead tally.

RPI made it 2-0 at 16:22 of the second on a breakaway, converted by junior Blake Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats). Receiving an outlet pass from Severson, Orosz broke in cleanly from the blue line and lifted a shot into the top right corner of the net. The eventual game-winning goal was her team-leading 11th of the season.

Junior Katie Sonntag (Whistler, BC) cut the deficit in half with a power play tally at 6:34 of the third period. An initial shot from the right point by classmate Ava Reynolds (Aurora, CO) was stopped by RPI senior netminder Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien), but the rebound fell to Sonntag, who whipped a shot inside the left post for her third goal of the year.

Union lifted Murray for an extra skater with two minutes to play, but the Dutchwomen could not find an equalizing goal, send the Engineers home with their second straight Mayor's Cup Trophy. Selander (9-9-5) finished with 29 saves, including 16 in the third period. Murray (2-10-2) had 23 stops.

RPI returns to action this weekend, when it visits No. 10 Colgate University and No. 6 Cornell on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. The Dutchwomen travel to Cornell on Friday and Colgate on Saturday.
