RPI blanks Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior captain Lovisa Selanderstopped all 41 shots she faced to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Brown University, on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 10-10-5 overall (7-5-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Bears drop to 5-14-2 (2-10-2 ECAC Hockey).

Selander (Solentuna, Sweden/RDE Riksserien) made 14 saves in the second period and 19 in the third to improve to 8-9-5 on the season. Brown freshman netminder Haley Kliczko (Niles, IL/Maine East) had 16 stops at the other end of the ice, suffering the tough-luck loss to drop to 1-7-1.

After two scoreless periods, RPI junior defenseman Kendra Farole (Irvine, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) netted the game's only goal, 6:01 into the third. Taking a point feed up the right wing boards from senior Taylor Schwalbe (Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's), Farole walked the puck to the high slot, before wiring a shot past Kliczko for her first collegiate tally. Senior assistant captain Aly Tremblay (Hayward, WI/Minnesota Revolution) picked up the secondary assist on the power play marker.

Brown turned a handful of chances down the stretch, including a power play opportunity with under six minutes to play. Selander made a big left pad save on the kill, before denying a shot on the rush by Bears senior Abby Niewchas (Chochrane, AB/Edge School for Athletes) inside the final minute.

RPI finished 1 for 3 on the power play and was a perfect 5 of 5 on the penalty kill. Selander, who had 10 saves while shorthanded, recorded her third shutout of the season and 10th of her career, tying with Nina Lynch '00 for fourth in program history.

The Engineers return to the ice on Tuesday afternoon, when they take on Union College in the second annual Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center in Albany. Brown visits Dartmouth and Harvard next weekend.
