CANTON, N.Y. -- Kaitijane Blumberg scored on a breakaway with just under seven minutes to play to lift the Brown University women's hockey team to a 3-3 tie with St. Lawrence University in an ECAC Hockey contest at Appleton Arena on Friday night.
Blumberg created a turnover at her own blue line and broke free on St. Lawrence goaltender Sonjia Shelly, beating the Saints' netminder low blocker side for the equalizer.
The Saints held a 43-14 advantage in shots on goal, but Brown goaltender Calla Isaac made 40 saves to snap Brown's eight-game losing streak.
"We had a great effort tonight, but didn't get enough past Isaac," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "Brown did a nice job capitalizing on their chances to tie the game as we couldn't get separation once it got to 3-2."
Maggie McLaughlin and Kalie Grant both scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Saints' offense.
Brown scored the first goal in both the first and second periods to take 1-0 and 2-1 leads. The Bears' Sena Hanson struck first just over halfway through the first period; Hanson picked up a loose puck after her initial shot was blocked in front and fired a wrist shot from the slot into the right side of the net.
McLaughlin tied the score less than three minutes later, sending a wrist shot off the crossbar and in after the Saints won an offensive zone faceoff. Rachael Smith and Grant picked up assists on the play.
The Bears regained the lead less than a minute into the second period when Megan Forrest redirected a shot by Darby Melia past Shelly for her first career collegiate goal.
Grant and McLaughlin once again capitalized on an offensive zone faceoff to tie the game, with McLaughlin winning the draw back to Grant, who hammered a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle past Isaac for her fifth goal of the season.
Nadine Edney gave the Saints their first lead of the game halfway through the second period with a shot from in deep. Isaac made the initial save, but the puck bounced off a Brown defender and into the net.
Shelly finished with 11 saves for the Saints, who moved to 10-11-2 overall, 5-5-1 in ECAC Hockey. Brown moved to 5-11-2, 2-7-2.
The Saints will host Yale on Saturday at Appleton Arena. The game, which was originally scheduled for a 3 p.m. opening faceoff, was moved up two hours to 1 p.m. in anticipation of the winter storm forecast in the Northeast.
