Orson hat-trick propels RPI past Union

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Blake Orosz netted her first career hat trick and had an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Union College, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 9-10-4 overall (6-5-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Dutchwomen drop to 2-19-2 (0-10-1 ECAC Hockey).

Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) netted the first her first goals at 17:04 of the first period, taking an outlet pass from senior Jaimie Grigsby (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves) and finishing on a breakaway. Orosz made a move to her backhand, before lifting a shot over Union junior goaltender Amelia Murray (McHenry, IL).

Rensselaer doubled its advantage at 5:05 of the second, when Orosz buried the rebound from close range. Classmate Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) carried the puck into the right circle and ripped a shot off the pad of Murray. Orosz pounced on the rebound and stuck it home, five-hole. Grigsby earned the secondary assist on the play – the second of her four on the night.

Union answered 24 seconds later on freshman Cassidy Michalicka's (Johnstown, ON) second career tally. Her shot from the top of the zone found its way into the top left corner of the net, quickly cutting the deficit to 2-1. Helpers on the play went to juniors Katelynn Russ (Crystal Lake, IL) and Ava Reynolds (Aurora, CO).

Orosz completed the hat trick 2:48 into the third period on a redirection at the left post. Classmate Kendra Farole (Irvine, CA/Anaheim Lady Ducks) ripped a low shot from the right point that Orosz steered in off the pipe for her 10th goal of the year.

The Engineers made it 4-1 at 9:38 of the final frame on a rebound tally by Repaci. Collecting the carom off her own shot, she slid a shot under the right arm of Murray for her sixth goal of the year. Orosz and Grigsby earned the assists.

Orosz and Grigsby each finished with four points, while the hat trick was the first by an Engineers player since Katie Rooney '17 netted three in a 6-2 victory over Brown on January 22, 2016. Alexa Gruschow '16 also had a hat trick that season, collecting all three RPI tallies in a 3-3 tie with New Hampshire on October 27, 2015. The four-point outbursts from both Orosz and Grigsby are the first since Rooney had three goals an assist against the Bears. Orosz now has six points (4 goals 2 assists) in the last two contests.

Senior goaltender Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) finished with 21 saves, while Murray had 29 at the other end of the ice. The Dutchwomen went 0 for 2 on the power play and did not commit a penalty.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon the second annual Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 3pm.
