RPI tops St. Lawrence in overtime

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Blake Orosz scored 11 seconds into overtime to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence University, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-10-4 overall (5-5-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Saints drop to 10-11-1 (5-5-0 ECAC Hockey).

RPI won the opening draw in the extra session and immediately pushed the puck up the right wing boards for Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats), who skated into the right circle and fired a shot, just under the crossbar, for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. A power play tally due to a Saints penalty that had carried over from the third period, the game-winning marker drew assists from freshman Mikayla Capelle (Dawson Creek, BC/Okanagan Hockey Academy) and senior Jaimie Grigsby (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves).

The Engineers scored the game's first goal at 10:33 of the opening frame, when sophomore Aimee Raithby (Burlington, ON/Burlington Barracudas) finished off a 2-on-1 break with senior Taylor Schwalbe(Anchorage, AK/Shattuck St. Mary's). Freshman Lilli Friis-Hansen (Lyngy, Denmark/Gentofte) poked the puck up the right wall for Schwable, who raced into the zone, before finding Raithby for the back-door tap in.

St. Lawrence graduate student Nadine Edney (Mississauga, ON) tied the game at 1-1 with a power play tally at 14:55, sticking home a centering feed from senior Justine Reyes (Chino Hill, CA). Junior Kalie Grant (Potsdam, NY) also had an assist on the goal, with Reyes' accounting for her 100th career point.

Graduate student Kayle Nielsen (Laguna Hills, CA) gave the Saints a brief lead at 1:46 of the second period, when she roofed a shot over RPI senior netminder Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) from just the low slot. A failed clearance by the Engineers left Nielsen alone for her first tally of the year.

RPI tied the game just 44 seconds later on junior Sabrina Repaci's (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) fifth goal of the season. Orosz snapped a pass from the left side of the zone that Repaci one-timed past St. Lawrence senior goaltender Sonjia Shelly (Braceville, IL), just inside the left post.

Both teams with 1 for 2 on the power play, with the Saints finishing with a 32-26 edge in shots. Selander (6-9-4) turned away 30 to earn in the victory, while Shelly (4-7-0) had 23 stops at the other end of the ice.

The victory was RPI's second ever against the Saints in 29 meetings (2-25-2) and the first at home (1-13-1). Orosz now has three game-winning goals, which have all come in the final minute of regulation or overtime.

Rensselaer is back on the ice next Friday, when it hosts area-rival Union College at the Houston Field House (6pm). The Engineers then face the Dutchwomen in the second annual Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center on Saturday (3pm). St. Lawrence hosts Brown and Yale next weekend.
