RPI falls at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Kristin Della Rovere recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Harvard University women's hockey team to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday afternoon at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. With the win, the Crimson improve to 3-5-1 overall (2-3-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 4-8-4 (2-3-0 ECAC Hockey).

Harvard opened the scoring at 12:05 of the first period, when Della Rovere cleaned up a rebound in front of the net for her third goal of the season. A shot by Lexie Laing was turned away by RPI senior netminder Lovisa Selander (2-7-4), but the puck deflected across the crease to Della Rovere for the easy tap in.

After a scoreless second period in which the Engineers held a 10-9 edge in shots, the Crimson doubled their advantage in the third on Becca Gilmore's third tally of the year. Skating up the left side on a 2-on-1 break, Gilmore lifted a backhand shot, just inside the near post. Della Rovere collected the lone helper on the play.

The Engineers pulled Selander with under two minutes to play, but could not sneak a puck past Harvard goaltender Lindsay Reed (3-4-1), who made 26 saves for her first collegiate shutout.

RPI had chances to pull even in the second, generating a handful of odd-man rushes up ice, but on each occasion, Reed was able to snuff them out. Senior Jaimie Grigsby finished with a game-high six shots, while four others had three shots, including freshman Mikayla Capelle. Selander had 25 saves between the pipes.

The Engineers are back on the ice tomorrow afternoon, when they visit Dartmouth College (2:30pm), while the Crimson host Union College tomorrow (3pm).
