Union Falls to St. Lawrence in Defensive Battle

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College women's hockey team dropped a 3-0 contest to St. Lawrence University, ranked 10th in the latest USCHO.com national poll and ninth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national rankings, on Saturday night at Bill Gray's Regional IcePlex.

Union (2-8-1, 0-2-0 ECAC Hockey) fought hard against a nationally ranked opponent for the second straight night, but the Dutchwomen could not get any offense going against St. Lawrence (6-5-1, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey). The Saints finished the night with a 34-20 edge in shots.

Union held SLU off the scoreboard for most of the opening period until taking a penalty with 3:05 on the clock, which resulted in a power-play goal from Kalie Grant at the 18:34 mark to give the Saints a lead.

The Saints added two more goals in the middle period, getting even-strength tallies from Skylar Podvey and Grant again to account for the three-goal advantage.

Sophomore Coco Francis kept Union in the game by turning aside 31 shots, including all nine in the third period.

Union will return home to Messa Rink next weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey games, beginning with a Friday night matchup with Yale University starting at 6 p.m.
