Cornell Beats NWHL's Buffalo Beauts in Exhibition

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's hockey team defeated the two-time reigning Isobel Cup finalists Buffalo Beauts of the National Women's Hockey League 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Lynah Rink.

The first four of the Big Red's goals came on the power play. Cornell finished the day going 4-8 on the player up opportunities. On the opposite side, they held to Beauts to just 1-9 on power play chances.

Cornell opened the scoring just over five minutes into the contest, when Kristin O'Neill found the back of the net with assists credited to Maddie Mills and Jaime Bourbonnais. O'Neil, who was Cornell's leading goal-scorer last season, recorded four goals in the Big Red's two exhibition games.

After tossing the puck around the zone, Bourbonnais sent the puck to Mills who found O'Neill for a straight away chance. O'Neill sent the puck past Beauts goaltender Nicole Hensley to put the Big Red up 1-0.

Cornell was quick to add to its lead as Diana Buckley netted a goal four minutes and 50 seconds later. The senior forward received a pass from Lenka Serdar, who was post to the right of the net and struck the one-timer to the opposite side of the net to give the Big Red the 2-0 lead.

The Beauts cut Cornell's lead to one just under eight minutes into the second period, but Cornell answered back with two of its own.

With just under seven and a half minutes remaining in the second frame, O'Neill had another prime opportunity. The junior forward beat two Beauts defenders to the net and fired a shot that was initially saved by Beauts netminder Shannon Szabados, who replaced Hensley. Then, Maddie Mills, who was trailing behind the play, struck home the loose rebound in front of the net with 7:23 left in the second.

After a penalty was assessed to the Beauts almost immediately following Mills' goal, Lenka Serdar got on the board. Positioned on the post, Serdar took an initial swipe that was pushed back out Grace Graham on the opposite side. Graham sent a chance that Szabados was again unable to corral and Serdar put home the puck to put the Big Red up 4-1.

The Beauts notched the first tally of the third period with a goal from Annika Zalewski.

Cornell responded with its first even strength goal of the afternoon. Joie Phelps scooped the puck at center ice and brought it into the offensive zone. The sophomore lined up a wrist shot and sent it past Szabados in net to make the score 5-2.

The Big Red will play in its annual Red/White game at 7 p.m. next Saturday before opening its regular season against Syracuse at 7 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Lynah Rink.
