RPI Beats Yale with Last Minute Goal

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Blake Orosz scored the eventual game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Yale University, on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-5-2 overall (2-2-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Bulldogs drop to 1-5-0 overall (1-5-0 ECAC Hockey).

Orosz (Chase Mills, NY/Nepean Wildcats) fired a one-timer off an offensive zone draw by classmate Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) into the top left corner of the net to give RPI a 2-1 lead with 28.3 seconds remaining in the third period. The tally was Orosz's team-leading third goal of the year.

Yale was able to pull sophomore goaltender Gianna Meloni (Washington, DC/Georgetown Visitation) with just under 20 seconds remaining, but could record a shot with the extra attacker, allowing the Engineers to hold for the win.

RPI opened the scoring at 12:07 of the first period, when Repaci stuck home a rebound at the left side of the net, after Orosz had her shot partially stopped by Meloni. Moving up the right side, Orosz ripped a shot that snuck through Meloni's pads and just past the left post, where Repaci was able to gather and push the puck into the an open cage. The goal was Repaci's second on the season.

After a scoreless second period in which Yale held a 13-6 edge in shots, the Bulldogs were able to tie the game (1-1) at 17:45 of the third. Senior Jordan Chancellor (Ramsey, MN/Minnesota Ice Cats) tapped home a feed from classmate Julia Yetman (Pierrefonds, PQ/Dawson College) for her second of the year. Sophomore Greta Skarzynski (Lake Forest, IL/Loyola Academy) earned the secondary assist.

Rensselaer senior goaltender Kira Bombay (Orleans, ON/Nepean Wildcats) earned her second win of the weekend, turning away 29 shots. Meloni (0-3-0) had 22 saves at the other end of the ice.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they host Penn State in a two-game, non-league series at the Houston Field House. Puck drop is set for 6pm on Friday and 3pm on Saturday. Yale hosts nationally-ranked St. Lawrence and Clarkson next weekend.
