Brown Drops Decision to Yale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team returned to Meehan Auditorium after seven-straight road games but were defeated by Yale, 3-0, in its homecoming on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs used two power-play goals in the second to take control of the contest and added an empty netter in the third to thwart off an attack by the Bears.

Brown (2-19-0, 1-13-0 ECAC) had three power-play opportunities in the opening period and outshot Yale (7-10-4, 5-7-2 ECAC) 14-8 but the frame ended scoreless.

The Bulldogs capitalized on their first power play chance of the afternoon in the second and took a 1-0 lead at 4:17 with a score from Greta Skarzynski. Brown was called for its second infraction of the contest at 6:28 and Yale again took advantage, this time with a tally from Mallory Souliotis (7:53).

It looked like the Bears had pulled within one with 1:06 left in the second as freshman Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) put back a rebound, but the goal was overturned due to goalie interference and the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. Yale outshot Brown 12-9 in the stanza with the help of four shots during its three power play chances.

To open the third, freshman Lauren Rippy (Plymouth, Mich.) made a handful of saves in the early going to keep the Bears in it. Brown went on a power play at 9:05 and had some chances in front but were unlucky and could not net a score. Yale looked like it had gone up 3-0 at 14:28 but had its goals overturned with goalie interference.

The Bears pushed for a score and pulled Rippy at 19:04 but the Bulldogs notched an empty net goal from Sharzynski, her second tally of the game, at 19:14 to bring the game to its conclusion.

Sharzynski finished with two goals and an assist to lead Yale. Sophomore Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) led Brown with six shots on the day while junior Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) added five. Rippy concluded the contest with 32 saves while Gianna Meloni made 30 stops for the Bulldogs.

Brown will remain at Meehan Auditorium next weekend and host Dartmouth on Friday, Jan. 26 and Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 27.  The Dartmouth contest is slated to start at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's match-up is at 3:00 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network.
