Cornell Tops RPI In Regular-Season Finale

TROY, N.Y. – The No. 5 women's hockey team closed out the regular season on a high note, clipping Rensselaer with a 2-1 victory at the Houston Field House on Saturday afternoon. Both of Cornell's goals came on special teams opportunities with Paige Lewis notching a short-handed goal while Kristin O'Neill struck on a power play.

Lewis notched her man-down score six minutes and 51 seconds into the first period with an assist coming from Jaime Bourbonnais. Lewis is now the third member of the team to earn a short-handed score, along with O'Neill and Erin O'Connor. The sophomore now has 15 points this season (7G, 8A) and 25 in her career.

O'Neill secured her game-winning power play goal 11:59 into the second frame and received help from her line mates, Maddie Mills and Brianna Veerman. The sophomore now has 19 goals on the season, including four on the man advantage.

Marlene Boissonnault nearly came away with back-to-back shutouts on the weekend, but the Engineers' Blake Orosz slipped one past her with just 25 seconds left in the second to secure the 2-1 result following a scoreless final frame.

Boissonnault made 29 saves in the victory, her most since stopping 34 shots against Colgate on Dec. 1. RPI's Kira Bombay made 26.

Rensselaer actually outshot Cornell, 30-28, making 10 shots on goal in each period. However, the Big Red did take more shots in the second period (13) than the opposition.

O'Neill led the shooting efforts for the squad, sending six towards the net while O'Connor, Grace Graham and Lewis each took three.

The team returns to Lynah Rink next weekend to host Princeton in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Hockey tournament. The quarterfinals is a best-of-three series with the first two games scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. If necessary, game three is set for Sunday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m.
