Harvard Slips by Dutchwomen

Harvard Slips by Dutchwomen

BOSTON, Mass. - Despite Katelynn Russ' continued scoring streak, the Union College Dutchwomen dropped a 3-2 contest to the Harvard Crimson this evening.

After a quiet first period, Russ gained control over a mishandled puck at the blue line in the third minute of the second period. From there, it was one-on-one, as Russ earned a breakaway and faked out Harvard's netminder to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead. Roughly five minutes later, Crimson Becca Gilmore scored and brought the game back to a tied up stalemate.

Gilmore and teammate Kat Hughes would each score a goal later on in the third period, making victory for the Dutchwomen seem out of reach. With under a minute to go, the Dutch pulled goaltender, Kate Spooner and with the extra attacker managed to pull within one. Russ scored again on assists from Cheyenne Harris and Caitlyn McLaren.

Despite pulling within one from Russ' goal, only 25 seconds remained on the clock and Union would ultimately fall 3-2 at the hands of the ECAC opponent.

The Dutchwomen return to action tomorrow afternoon to take on Dartmouth. Puck drop is slated for a 3 p.m. start in New Hampshire.

  • Russ' hot streak continues, as she has now scored 10 points in Union's last eight games.
  • With her first goal tonight, Russ has broken the program record for most goals scored in a single season. The previous record was 14, held by Elise Nichols during the 2004-05 season. Russ now has 16 on the year, after tonight's game.
  • With assists on tonight's goal, both McLaren and Harris move their season assist totals to 14 apiece, the leaders for assists on the team.
