Yale Just Misses Upset

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Despite a formidable foe in the defending national champions, in their barn, the Yale Bulldogs did not let up. A close battle on Saturday afternoon just evaded the Bulldogs' grasp however as the second ranked Clarkson Golden Knights took a 2-1 win.

Yale (9-12-4, 7-9-2 ECAC) found itself in another hole early, a day after falling behind 4-0 at St. Lawrence, as Clarkson took a 2-0 lead midway through the game. However, Greta Skarzynski did what she has done best all year, burying a puck to give Yale its first goal. Skarzynski finished +1 with three shots on net in the game.

Clarkson (26-3-1, 16-2-0) held on from there, even attacking the Yale net. Gianna Meloni finished with a tough 23 saves on 25 shots for Yale to keep the Bulldogs within one.

Although any moral victory is lessened without a win in the stat book, Yale can certainly hold its head high after keeping even with Clarkson, ranked second in the nation. Both sides had a fighting shot in the game, and the stats were nearly split down the middle as Clarkson outshot Yale 25-19, with both sides not succeeding on their power play chances. Even the face-offs were even, at 22 apiece.

Yale looks to get back in the win column on Friday, February 9th, as it heads to Cornell for a 6 p.m. battle.
