Justine Reyes scored two goals in the first four minutes and 19 seconds to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-1 win over McGill University in an exhibition game at Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints scored two goals on the power play and had a 24-14 advantage in shots on goal against the Martlets, who finished as the runner-up in Canada's U SPORTS national championship last season. The game was the first for St. Lawrence, which enters the season ranked No. 6 and No. 7 in the two national women's college hockey polls.

"It was nice to see the team get a great start right out of the gate," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "McGill always presents a good challenge, so it was encouraging to see us skate well and to get the power play clicking this early in the year."

The Saints opened the scoring with a power play goal just three minutes into the game. First-year defenseman Skylar Podvey sent a shot on net from the point, and Reyes shoveled the rebound into a wide open net.

Reyes scored her second of the game just 1:19 later from almost the same exact spot, putting home a pass from Hannah Miller.

Amanda Butterfield gave St. Lawrence a 3-0 lead with the Saints' second power play tally of the game, sniping a wrist shot from the point just inside the post on McGill goaltender Tricia Deguire's blocker side.

McGill's Kate Devries spoiled the Saints' shutout bid halfway through the third period, sending a shot from the left point that deflected off a player in front and into the short side of the net.

Sonjia Shelly was perfect in 31 minutes in net for the Saints, stopping three shots before giving way to Grace Harrison, who made 10 saves and allowed the Martlets' lone goal.

Tricia Deguire made 21 saves in the loss for McGill.

St. Lawrence will open the regular season next weekend with a two-game series at Mercyhurst.
