Brown Falls at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Trailing 5-0 in the third period, the Brown women's hockey team tallied three unanswered goals in less than four minutes to pull within two, but Harvard would score at 19:07 to secure a 6-3 win at Bright-Landry Center on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period and a two-goal Harvard second, the Crimson pulled away to open the third, with goals at 3:56 (Keely Moy) and 4:40 (Brooke Jovanovich) for a four-goal lead. Jananovich added her second at 9:58 to increase the Crimson's lead to 5-0.

Junior Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) started the scoring for the Bears in the third at 12:45, her first goal of the season. Senior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) quickly added Brown's second goal, a power-play score, at 14:34. Freshman Abby Nearis (Beverly, Mass.) and junior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.) contributed the assists.

Freshman Kaitijane Blumberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) followed suit and scored the Bears' third straight to pull them within two (5-3) at 16:13, with sophomore Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Abby Niewchas (Cochrane, Alberta) providing the helpers.

Harvard (3-1-0, 3-1-0 ECAC) halted the comeback at 19:07 with Haley Mullins putting in the goal. The third concluded with shots even for both teams, 12-12.

The Bears (0-7-0, 0-5-0 ECAC) were a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill for the game and were 2-for-6 while on the power play, with their two scores coming the in the three-goal third.

The opening period ended scoreless with both teams having a handful of scoring chances. Harvard held the advantage in shots for the first, 9-5. The Bears had two power play opportunities in the stanza and fought off their own infraction later on in the period.

After a flurry of shots, Harvard was able to take a 1-0 lead in the second when Bradley Fusco registered the score at 3:36. The Crimson increased their advantage at 11:13 with a goal from Val Turgeon. Harvard doubled its offense in the frame, with an 18-10 lead in shots.

With Brown's second goal of the game, S. Swanstrom has registered a goal in her last three games.

Sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) finished the contest with 33 saves in goal, while Beth Larcom made 24 stops for the Crimson.

The Bears return to the ice tomorrow (Nov. 11) and will travel to Dartmouth for a 3:00 p.m. game at Thompson Arena. The contest will be broadcast on the Ivy League Network and ESPN3.
