Kennedy Marchment and Hannah Miller both got on the scoresheet three times and Grace Harrison made 20 saves to lead the sixth-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-1 win over Mercyhurst in a non-league game in the Saints' season opener in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday night.

Marchment scored two goals and added an assist, while Miller scored once and assisted on two goals for the Saints, who won their season opener for the second year in a row.

"Mercyhurst really took it to us in stretches of the game tonight," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "They had some good jump and moved us off a bundle of pucks. When we were able to get free we had a couple good bounces and we capitalized at key times to take away their momentum. Our penalty kill did a great job and Grace was solid all night."

Miller set up the Saints' first goal, sending a pass from the blue line from the left sideboards to Justine Reyes in the left faceoff circle. Reyes lifted a wrist shot past Mercyhurst goaltender Kennedy Blair's glove side for the Saints' first goal of the season.

Miller gave the Saints a 2-0 edge just 31 seconds later, breaking free of the Lakers' defenders on assists from Marchment and Jessica Poirier.

Marchment increased the lead to three, burying a rebound after Skylar Podvey's blast from the point went wide but bounced off the boards right to Marchment at the right post.

Marchment scored her second goal of the game on a power play late in the second to give the Saints a 4-0 lead, once again putting home a rebound when Blair stopped a blast from the point by Miller.

Mercyhurst broke up Harrison's shutout bid with five and a half minutes to play, as Brooke Hartwick scored on a scramble in front of the net after Harrison stopped a shot but the Saints failed to gain possession of the loose puck in front.

The Saints, now 1-0-0 on the season, will face once again face Mercyhurst, which fell to 0-3-0, on Saturday at 2 p.m.
