RPI Concludes Season in Quarterfinals with Loss to Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Senior Genevieve Bannon scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, to lead the third-ranked Clarkson University women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory and a two-game series sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 27-4-5, while the Engineers conclude their season at 10-24-2.

Clarkson opened the scoring midway through the first period, when Loren Gabel finished on the power play for her 16th goal of the season. Josiane Pozzebon and Ella Shelton picked up the assists on the tally, which came at 9:17.

Corie Jacobson doubled the hosts' advantage (2-0) with just 14 seconds remaining in the period, with Gabel and Jessica Gillham recording assists.

Rensselaer senior captain Laura Horwood answered 15 seconds into the second to draw RPI within 2-1. Sophomore Jaimie Grigsby and junior Shayna Tomlinson had helpers on Horwood's sixth of the year.

Bannon put the Golden Knights up for good at 11:27 of the second, making it a 3-1 game. The lone assist went to classmate Carley Mercer.

The Engineers made it a one-goal game (3-2) at 15:15, as junior Marisa Raspa scored off a feed from freshman Megan Hayes. RPI did not get any closer, however, as Clarkson added two insurance goals in the third and held a 10-6 edge in shots in the final frame.

Michaela Pejzlova made it 4-2 at 12:54, before Bannon capped the scoring with a shorthanded empty-netter.

Junior goaltender Shea Tiley (23-4-5) finished with 20 saves, while RPI sophomore Lovisa Selander (10-22-2) had 23 stops at the other end of the ice.

Top-seeded Clarkson will host the 2017 ECAC Hockey Championships, next weekend at Cheel Arena.
