Union ties RPI

SCHENECTADY, NY - After trailing RPI by two goals midway through he third period, Union College women's hockey team senior forward Emily Erickson and first year Katelynn Russ found the back of the net just a minute apart to square the game at 2-2.

With the score tied, the game would head to overtime. Neither team was able to get a sustained offensive attack in the period as the teams combined for four shots on net. The 2-2 tie gives both teams a point in the ECAC standings while also giving Union its first result over rival RPI since Jan. 23, 2015.

Both offenses came out of the gate getting pucks to the net as in the first period the Dutchwomen (10) and Engineers (17) combined for 27 shots on net. The goalies were up to the task as Kate Spooner made 17 of her 41 total saves in the period.

The game would remain scoreless heading into the third period. The Engineers found the scoreboard first when a Makenna Thomas shot was stopped by Spooner. Jaimie Grisgby followed up on the rebound opportunity and slotted it home at the 4:12 mark of the period.

Four minutes later at the 8:32 mark, RPI would add to its total. Shayana Tomlinson received a centering pass from Laura Horwood and muscled it past Spooner.

Union would answer quickley scoring at 9:58 of the final stanza. Cheyenne Harris brought the puck up the right flank before centering it right in front. The traffic flew past the goal leaving just Erickson in front of the net with the goalie. She poked it past to put the Dutchwomen on the board.

Just 65 seconds later, Union tied it up as Arianna Kosakowski picked up a loose puck and fired a wrister on net. The rebound came off the stick of the Engineer netminder bouncing right into the slot where Russ knocked it past her and into the back of the net.

Union faces RPI again tomorrow afternoon as the two teams face off at Houston Field House in Troy, NY. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
