Grigsby's Double Powers RPI Over Yale in OT

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Jaimie Grigsby scored two goals, including the overtime-winner, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Yale University on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-14-1 overall (4-6-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Bulldogs drop to 5-9-3 (3-6-1 ECAC Hockey).

Grigsby (Whitby, ON/Whitby Wolves) steered home the game-ending tally with just 46.8 seconds left in overtime. The extra session began ominously for the Engineers as they were forced to kill off 3:02 of penalty time, including a 5-on-3 disadvantage for 1:02. Sophomore netminder Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien) stood tall making six saves during the successful kill.

Rensselaer broke into the attacking zone with a minute left in OT and worked the puck to the right corner. Freshman Sabrina Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Junior Aeros) flipped a pass to the point for senior Hannah Behounek (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka High School), who ripped a one-time towards goal. Grigsby neatly tipped the low shot past Yale freshman goalie Tera Hofmann (Toronto, ON) and inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs nearly too a late first period lead, but RPI senior Laura Horwood (Belleville, ON/Durham West Lightning) was able to sweep the puck off the goal line with inches to spare. The scoreless frame ended with each team recording 10 shots.

A scoreless second frame saw just seven total shots, with five going the way of the visitors from Yale.

Play picked up in the third and the Engineers took advantage of their fourth power play to take a 1-0 lead at 8:51 of the stanza. Junior Amanda Kimmerle (Anoka, MN/Anoka High School) took a shot from the left point that caromed to Grigsby at the right side of the cage. She buried the close range effort to snap the scoreless deadlock.

Yale answered just 1:01 later on freshman Sophie Veronneau's (Ottawa, ON) first collegiate tally. Senior Krista Yip-Chuck (Whitby, ON) and junior Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, AB) earned the assists on the equalizing tally.

Selander (7-12-1) finished with 31 saves, while Hofmann (3-6-3) had 18 at the other end of the ice. RPI finished 1 for 4 on the power play, while Yale was 0 for 3.

The Engineers return to the ice next weekend, when they visit Harvard and Dartmouth on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm), respectively. The Bulldogs travel to third-ranked Clarkson and fourth-ranked St. Lawrence on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (3pm).
