Princeton Tops Quinnipiac

Freshman Carly Bullock scored all three goals to secure her first career hat trick as the Princeton women's hockey team defeated No. 8 Quinnipiac 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.

Freshman Steph Neatby made 29 saves as she improves to 4-1 on the season.

The win marks the Tigers first over the Bobcats since Jan. 3, 2011.

Quinnipiac (14-5-3, 7-3-1) got on the board first scoring 14 seconds into its first power-play opportunity at 5:40. Kate MacKenzie used a backhand to put away a rebound that had been turned aside by Neatby. It was Kenzie Prater that stopped it from going into the corner and pushed into the slot for MacKenzie.

The Tigers evened it up thanks to a 5x3 opportunity less than four minutes later with both Emma Greco and Emma Woods in the box. Senior Kelsey Koelzer skated into her own zone to collect a puck that had been dumped in and skated up the left wing before dishing off the Bullock in the high slot who sent the puck high over the shoulder of Sydney Rossman.

Princeton pushed the lead ahead to 3-1 with a second power-play goal at 9:44 and exactly four minutes later Bullock sealed the hat trick. Koelzer again had the primary assist, with Claire Thompson who had two goals yesterday, earning the secondary. Koelzer released a shot from the right side and Bullock was open on the doorstep to shovel the puck in using her backhand. Bullock redirected a shot from the right point by Molly Strabley for the eventual game-winning goal at 13:44.

With 1:30 remaining, Quinnipiac pulled Rossman and called a timeout to try to inch closer on the scoresheet. Woods was able to get an extra-attacker goal past Neatby with Melissa Samoskevich and Kate MacKenzie assisting with 51 seconds left.

The Princeton defense stood tall for the waning seconds to earn the victory.

Princeton was 2 for 5 on the power play while Quinnipiac was 1 for 4.

Rossman finished the game with 25 saves as the Bobcats had a slight 31-28 edge in shots.

Princeton is now 10-6-2 overall and 6-4-1 in the ECAC. The squad continues league play next weekend, Jan. 6 & 7 when it hosts Dartmouth & Harvard.
