TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Sabrina Repaci scored the game's only goal, late in the third period to lift the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Cornell University in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-5-1 (1-0-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Big Red drop to 2-1-0 (0-1-0 ECAC Hockey).
Repaci (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) stole the puck in the offensive zone, before ringing a shot off the right post. The rebound caromed to left side of the crease, where Repaci was waiting to swat home her third goal of the year. The unassisted tally came with just 2:26 left in the third period.
The Big Red pulled senior goaltender Paula Voorheis (Shanty Bay, ON/Aurora Junior Panthers) with 1:10 to go, but couldn't sneak a shot past RPI sophomore goalie Lovisa Selander (Sollentuna, Sweden/SDE Riksserien), who finished with 41 saves on the day.
Cornell controlled play for much of the game, out-shooting the Engineers 13-9 in the first period and 15-4 in the second. RPI stayed strong defensively, killing off three penalties, including a five-shot effort from Cornell in the second.
Voorheis (1-1-0) finished with 19 saves, while Selander (3-4-1) made 15 stops in the second period alone. RPI finished 0 for 2 on the man advantage with two shots, while Cornell generated 10 shots on their three tries.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they host sixth-ranked Colgate at the Houston Field House (3pm). Cornell visits Union travel to Schenectady to take on Union (3pm).
