PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) recorded her second-career hat trick as the Brown women's hockey team shutout Sacred Heart, 7-0, to sweep the non-conference weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. With the victory, the Bears open the season 2-0 and increase their all-time record over the Pioneers to 6-0.
Freshman Alley Rempe (Calgary, Alberta) duplicated her performance from her first-career game, and again notched one goal and two assists. Sophomore Bridget Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) also had a strong showing, scoring two goals, while senior Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.), sophomore Cara Najjar(Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Lynch (Victoria, Minn.) each recorded two assists.
A. Rempe tallied the Bears' first goal at 8:34 of the first period while the team was short-handed. Woo started the play, collecting a loose puck off a SHU turnover, and fired a shot that hit the Pioneers' goalie. A. Rempe was there to put in the rebound for a 1-0 lead. Brown next had another rebound goal (15:01), while on the power play to bring the score to 2-0. This time, Donovan was in front of the net for the tally. Woo again took the initial shot that was saved, and earned her second assist of the afternoon. Lynch was also credited with an assist.
Brown went up 3-0, with its second power-play goal to close out the opening stanza at 17:59. A. Rempe passed it to Najjar at the point who ripped a shot towards net. Carey was in front of the goalie and was able to redirect the puck into the net.
The Bears dominated the offense in the first period, putting up 22 shots compared to the Pioneers' four. Brown was also able to fight off all three of their penalties, and capitalized when Sacred Heart was in the penalty box, going 2-for-2 in man-up opportunities.
Brown tacked on two more goals in the second period, with Donovan and Carey both scoring their second goal of the game. Donovan's tally came at 9:01 on a battle in front of the net that she was able to touch in. Najjar earned her second assist of the day on the play. Carey's score was at 15:00 when she got the puck from A. Rempe at the boards and skated to the net and five-holed the goalie.
The Bears again held the shot lead in the second, this time 16-5.
In the third period, junior Samantha Swantstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) made it 6-0 with her first goal of the season at 4:56 with a pass from Lynch in front of the net. Freshman Sena Hanson (New Brighton, Minn.) also assisted to score.
Donovan registered her hat trick at 6:18 when she skated through the slot and beat the keeper high glove side. Freshman Lucinda Quigley (Newton, Mass.) registered her first-career point with an assist on the sequence.
Overall, the Bears outshot the Pioneers, 50-17, the most shots a Brown team has had since Dec. 7, 2011 when the squad had 54 at Sacred Heart.
Each team ended the game with seven penalties, Brown going 2-for-7 on the power play while fighting off all of their infraction.
Junior Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta) combined for the shutout in goal, with Landry stopping nine shots and Isaac turning away eight. Devan Kane had 25 saves for Sacred Heart in the loss, including 19 in the first period. Sarah Erban and Jadeyn Kastning also saw time in net for the Pioneers, registering 13 and five saves, respectively.
The Bears next open conference play, hosting Princeton on Friday Oct. 28 and No. 3/3 Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Meehan Auditorium. The first game of the weekend starts at 6:00 p.m. while the second begins at 3:00 p.m.
