Root Named League’s Best Defensive Forward

ALBANY, N.Y. -- ECAC Hockey today announced Yale’s Jesse Root has been named the recipient of the 2013-14 Men’s Best Defensive Forward Award as selected by the league’s coaches.  

A terrific two-way player who was effective in many roles during his tenure at Yale, including serving as team captain during the 2013-14 season. Root shared the team lead in scoring on 14 goals, while recording 23 assist for a team-high 37 points on the season.

He ranked fifth in face-offs won (372) and sits ninth among all league players in faceoffs percentage won (.564). He had been a clutch goal scorer for the Blue this season registering four game-winning goals and recording two shorthanded goals. He currently ranks third among all ECAC Hockey players averaging 1.23 points per games played, which ranks 12th in all of Division I hockey. His plus/minus rating of +16 is among league players in overall games.

The Pittsburgh, P.A. native recently signed a deal for a tryout with the American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
