Matheson Opts to Play in Netherlands

The Friesland Flyers (Netherlands) announced the signing of former Union standout Brock Matheson for the 2013-14 season.

Matheson heads to the Netherlands after spending the 2012-13 season with the Belfast Giants (Elite Ice Hockey League).

A second-year professional, Matheson competed in 46 regular-season games with Belfast, compiling four points, including one goal. He appeared in four postseason games, registering one assist.

In 2011-12, Matheson completed his first season as a professional with the Stockton Thunder, a season that featured a call-up to the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League. He totaled three assists in 48 games, 45 of which came with Stockton.

Before turning pro, Matheson, as a senior, captained the Dutchmen to their first conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth. Matheson was named ECAC Hockey Defensive Defenseman of the Year. He was also named Second Team All-ECAC Hockey. Immediately following his senior season, Matheson was called up to the Binghamton Senators of the AHL.
