The New Jersey Devils didn’t need more bullet points to become one of the NHL’s best 2017-18 stories. The emergence of rookies Will Butcher (18 points), Jesper Bratt (17 points) and Nico Hischier (18 points) has injected youth, speed and skill into an organization known in the past for dull, predictable play.
The renaissance of wing Taylor Hall (27 points in 25 games) has underscored just how foolish that trade by the Edmonton Oilers was, and the return of Brian Boyle from a battle with chronic myelogenous leukemia has provided all the inspiration the Devils will need as they contend for the Metropolitan Division title and their first playoff berth since 2012.
General manager Ray Shero wasn’t satisfied with those storylines, though. Shero pulled off a blockbuster trade on Thursday, sending forwards Adam Henrique, Joseph Blandisi and a third-round pick in 2018 to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Sami Vatanen and a conditional third-round pick.
