CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior forward Ryan Donato and former Harvard standout Noah Welch '05 will begin competition with the 2018 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey team tomorrow morning in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Team USA is competing in Group B alongside Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia, and opens the competition tomorrow morning with a 6:30 a.m. (ET) contest against Slovenia. The game will air on NBC Sports Network.
Donato, a native of Scituate, Mass., is in the midst of his best individual season with the Crimson, recording a point in 14 straight games to start the season and leading the team with 31 points (21 goals, 10 assists). Donato, Harvard's candidate for the Hobey Baker Award, was the first player in college hockey to reach 20 goals this year, taking just 19 games to do it. The 2017 Ivy Player of the Year and First Team All-Ivy and All-ECAC Hockey selection, Donato earned a bronze medal with the United States at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championships.
Welch, a two-time All-American and standout defenseman at Harvard, captained the Crimson as a senior in 2004-05. The Brighton, Mass., native registered 76 points (23 goals, 53 assists) in 129 career games. He played on two ECAC Hockey Tournament (Whitelaw Cup) winning teams (2002, 2004), helping the Crimson reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his four years. Welch has enjoyed a 13-year professional career, including parts of five seasons in the NHL. He currently plays for Växjö Lakers HC in the Swedish Hockey League.
Harvard men's hockey is no stranger to the Winter Olympics, with 28 men's hockey alumni selected as a coach, player, or member of team personnel of their respective national teams, including current head coach Ted Donato '91, who represented the U.S. at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.
Ted Donato will join his son Ryan and former captain Noah Welch in South Korea next week, when USA Hockey aims for its first gold medal since the "Miracle on Ice" team won gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.
