Safe to say the NHL Network will do some higher-than-normal ratings in Blair County on Wednesday night. That’s when rookie forward Sam Lafferty, a Hollidaysburg native, is scheduled to play the first preseason game of his NHL career when the Penguins visit the Detroit Red Wings.
NEWARK -- If you’re looking at the numbers alone, Nick Lappin’s are looking like he’s ready for the next step in his hockey career. A 31-goal season and a 53-point season for Binghamton of the American Hockey League in 2017-18 is nothing to discount. It was a down year for the Binghamton Devils, but it’s still tough to produce like that in the NHL’s top development league.
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce four player signings for the upcoming season, bringing their total up to 16. Wheeling has signed forwards Tyler Bird, Yushiroh Hirano, Andrew Schmit, and Bryan Sienerth.
Undrafted, unheralded and yet undeterred, this is a look-how-far-you’ve-come landmark for Calgary Flames crash-and-bang sort Garnet Hathaway. For the first time in his career, the right-winger scribbled his name on a one-way contract.
Pardon my title reference borrowed from Larry David of Curb Your Enthusiasm, but it seems fitting as Nick Lappin was perhaps the best player on the Binghamton Devils last season in the second edition of my off-season series reports First Impressions.
More player previews to kick off your Labor Day weekend. It’s another two-fer for you. Last time we doubled up with Ryan Sproul and Robbie Russo on the blue line. Today we’re doubling up with a few forwards, Matt Lorito and Ben Street.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting that that former Montreal Canadian and New Jersey Devil Booby Farnham will attend New York Rangers training camp on a personal tryout. The 28-year-old joined the league with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2014 and has only played 67 NHL games in his career. He last appeared in a game on January 19, 2016, with the Montreal Canadians.
Reading, PA – The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with forward Mark Naclerio. He becomes the ninth player announced as signed by the Royals to a standard player’s contract for the 2017-18 season.
RALEIGH, NC - Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Dennis Robertson on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Robertson $650,000 on the NHL level or $100,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level in 2017-18.
