RPI's Offense Explodes to Take Down Canisius

The senior line of Todd BurgessJake Marrello and Patrick Polino combined for nine points to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 7-2 victory over Canisius College, on Saturday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-2-0 overall, while the Golden Griffins drop to 0-3-0.

Canisius junior Matt Long (Orland Park, IL/Springfield Jr. Blues) netted the game's first goal at 5:12 of the opening stanza, finishing off a 3-on-1 break into the RPI zone for his first goal of the season. Classmate Logan Gestro (South Lyon, MI/Corpus Christi IceRays) and Blake Wareham (Park Ridge, IL/Janesville Jets) picked up the helpers on the play.

The Engineers then ran off five straight goals, including sophomore Brady Ferner's (Dakota Dunes, SD/Sioux City Musketeers) first of the season at 9:00 of the first. Marrello (Slingerlands, NY/PAL Jr. Islanders) saw his shot from the right side kicked out by Canisius sophomore goaltender Matt Ladd (Getzville, NY/New Jersey Junior Titans), but the rebound caromed right Ferner, who was able to fire into an open cage.

Burgess (Phoenix, AZ/Fairbanks Ice Dogs) then gave RPI the lead for good with his first of two on the night. Sophomore Jakub Lacka (Brastislava, Slovakia/Central Illinois Flying Aces) sent the puck up the right wing boards for Burgess, who swooped in and lifted a backhand shot past Ladd for the tally. Ferner also drew an assist on the goal that came at 14:03 of the first.

Rensselaer made it a 3-1 game at 7:42 of the second, when Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) buried the eventual game-winning goal off a feed from sophomore Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues U20).

The Engineers then forced a turnover in the offensive zone on a big hit by Billy Jerry (River Falls, WI/Madison Capitals), that sprung a 2-on-1 in front of goal. Polino slide a pass across to Marrello, who went top shelf for the first of his two on the night.

Leppanen netted a breakaway goal at 17:58 to give the hosts a 5-1 advantage before the second intermission, with the lone assist going to freshman Zach Dubinsky (Highland Park, IL/Lincoln Stars).

The Golden Griffins got one back midway through the third period, when junior Austin Alger (Livonia, MI/Muskegon Lumberjacks) snuck a point blank shot past RPI sophomore netminder Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons). Senior Matt Hoover (Brantford, CT/Nanaimo Clippers) sent the pass from behind the goal for Alger's second of the season.

RPI capped the scoring with two goals in the final eight minutes as Burgess and Marrello each potted their second goals. Marrello snuck a shot home at the right post after Burgess went coast-to-coast for a power play tally at 12:53.

Savory (1-1-0) finished with 27 saves, while Matt Ladd (0-2-0) and Jacob Barczewski (O'Fallon, MO/Tri-City Storm) had 16 and 11 stops, respectively. The Engineers finished 3 for 5 on the power play, while Canisius wound up 0 for 5.

RPI is back on the ice next weekend with a home-and-home ECAC Hockey series with area-rival Union College, which begins on Friday night in Schenectady (7pm). The Golden Griffins take on the US Under-18 Team in an exhibition game on October 27 (3:05pm).
