ALBANY, N.Y. - NCAA Hockey will be coming back to New York’s Capital Region next year, as the 2020 Division I Men’s East Regional will be played in Albany’s Times Union Center. ECAC Hockey will serve as the host of the event, which is set to begin on March 28, 2020.
This will be the 12th time that the Times Union Center will have hosted an NCAA Hockey Tournament event, and the first time since 2016 when Quinnipiac came out of a region that also included RIT, Yale, and UMass-Lowell.
“We’re thrilled to be able to able to bring NCAA Hockey to the Capital Region once again,” said ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell. “We look forward to working with the Times Union Center to put on a great Regional event, and showcase Albany to the college hockey world.”
Along with the 11 previous NCAA Ice Hockey events they’ve put on, the Times Union Center is also involved in college hockey on a yearly basis, hosting the annual “Mayor’s Cup” game between ECAC Hockey opponents Union and RPI. The building was also home to AHL franchises for a number of years, and has also hosted numerous other sporting events including arena league football, NCAA basketball, indoor lacrosse, among others.
"We are honored to have been chosen to host the 2020 Division I Men's Ice Hockey East Regional. Times Union Center takes great pride in its history with the NCAA and the events that we have been fortunate enough to host in the past," said Bob Belber, SMG General Manager of Times Union Center. " It has always been and will continue to be our goal to ensure that the student-athletes and their fans have the championship experience that they worked so hard to achieve. We know hockey fans in the Capital Region will come out to see the best in college hockey, and we are fortunate to have been chosen to host not one, but two NCAA events in 2020.
Albany was one of the four Regional Sites announced on Friday, which also include the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. (Northeast Regional), the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. (Midwest Regional), and the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, Col. (West Regional).
A rich tradition of history within college hockey, the Times Union Center has twice hosted the NCAA Division I Men’s Championship game. In 1992, the building saw Lake Superior State earn its second national title over Wisconsin. The championship came back to Albany in 2001, when Boston College defeated North Dakota for its first NCAA title in 50 years.
“Add this to Albany County’s long and proud history of hosting some of the best of NCAA sports in the country, dating back to 1995 when our seats sold out for the Men’s Basketball Championship East Regional,” said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy. “Thanks in part to our historic investments in the Times Union Center, we are once again the site of some amazing talent as we look forward to not only the men’s basketball regional next year, but now the Division I Men’s Hockey East Regional as well. This will be a boon for tourism and our local businesses.”
