Brown punches ticket to Lake Placid, sweeps Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Brown men's hockey team scored four goals in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and upset No. 5 and top-seeded Quinnipiac, 4-3, to complete the series sweep in the ECAC Quarterfinals Saturday night at Frank Perrotti Arena. Brown advances to the ECAC Tournament semifinals in Lake Placid, with an opponent still to be determined.

Brown (15-13-5) claimed game one in overtime on Friday and swept the quarterfinal series to advance to the league's final four for the first time since the 2012-13 season. Brown, the eighth seed, is 4-0 in the playoffs and went 3-1 against Quinnipiac this season, winning all three games on the road.

"Unbelievable effort by our team," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I can't stress enough the resiliency of this group to come back on one of the best teams in the country in their barn and eliminate them. I'm so proud of the team and the way they represent Brown. It's another step and our goal is to win a championship. We're looking forward to Lake Placid."

Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) had two goals, including the game winner, while Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) and Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) also scored in the period. Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) had two assists.

Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 28 saves in the win. Andrew Shortridge made 23 stops on the other end.

Alex Whelan gave Quinnipiac the early lead as he scored at 1:08 on the team's first shot of the game. Whelan scored again at 14:12 when he crashed the net and converted the rebound to give the Bobcats a two-goal lead after 20 minutes.

Quinnipiac killed a penalty late in the second period to maintain a two-goal advantage heading into the third period.

Brown scored two goals in the opening 1:54 of the third period to tie the game. Gottlieb took a feed from Colin Burston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and beat Shortridge at 1:22 to put the Bears on the board with his fifth of the season. Marchin then scored 32 seconds later, as he set up in front of the net and hit home the rebound following a shot from Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) for his tenth of the season.

Beaudoin put the Bears in front at 11:21 just after a Brown penalty expired, as he scooped up the puck in the neutral zone, and finished the breakaway with his second goal of the series.

Marchin added his second of the period at 13:13 as he scored from the slot following a faceoff win to make it a two-goal game. Berger and Tristan Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) earned the assists on the play.

Craig Martin scored an extra-attacker goal at 18:04 to cut the lead to one, but the Bears kept the Bobcats off the board the rest of the way to secure the series sweep.

Brown will play in the ECAC semifinals next weekend with an opponent still to be determined.
