POTSDAM, N.Y – Yale spotted one of the hottest college hockey teams in the country an early lead and could not recover. Game one of the best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series against No. 11 Clarkson went to the home team, 3-1, and the Bulldogs must win Saturday night to keep their season alive.
Josh Dunne scored on an advantage 4:22 into the game, and then Nick Campoli and Aaron Thow found the net 43 seconds apart later in the first period before Yale senior goalie Sam Tucker (24 saves) closed the door on his net.
There was still some hope left when the Bulldogs finally broke through. Jack St. Ivany's wrist shot from the high slot went five-hole on Jake Kielly (23 saves) with just under 5 minutes to play as the ice titled in favor of the visitors. Tucker was pulled for an extra skater with 2 minutes left and his squad continued to put rubber on the Clarkson net.
The Elis (15-14-3) and Golden Knights (23-10-2) square off in game two at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
