Brown falls to No. 5 Quinnipiac

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) trimmed the deficit to two goals midway through the third period, but the Brown men's hockey team fell to No. 5 Quinnipiac, 4-1, in ECAC play Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown (11-12-5, 8-8-5) secured home ice for the first round of the ECAC playoffs next weekend after Colgate fell to Clarkson in league action. Brown will host Princeton tomorrow night in the regular season finale. Quinnipac moved to 24-7-2, 13-6-2.

Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 31 saves in net for the Bears. Andrew Shortridge had 16 stops for the Bobcats.

"We weren't crisp in the first period," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We need a much better start tomorrow night to have success. We're a team in every aspect and we need to play together, and I thought we were disjointed tonight, so we need to refocus and play the defending ECAC champs tomorrow."

Alex Whelan opened the scoring for the Bobcats midway through the first period when he scooped up the puck in the neutral zone during a Brown power play and notched the short-handed goal for the one-goal lead.

Quinnipiac added two more goals in the final two minutes of the first period, as TJ Friedmann scored from the slot at 18:09, before Odeen Tufto tacked on another goal 50 seconds later for the three-goal advantage.

The two teams played to a scoreless middle period as Brown killed the only penalty of the frame.

Maloney put the Bears on the board at 11:25 in the third period. After a faceoff win, Brent Beaudoin(Londonderry, N.H.) skated into the offensive end and sent a centering pass to Maloney, who beat Shortridge for his third of the season. Colin Burston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) also picked up an assist.

Brown pulled Kania for the extra skater with 3:05 left in regulation, and tested Shortridge with a pair of shots, but Nick Jermain scored the empty-net goal at 19:27 to secure the win.

Brown will play host to Princeton Saturday night (7 PM) in the regular season finale.
