RPI strikes back, downs Colgate

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team scored a pair of power play goals en route to a 3-1 victory over Colgate University, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-17-1 overall (5-9-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Raiders drop to 7-16-2 (4-7-2 ECAC Hockey).

Colgate netted the game's first goal, 5:54 into the opening frame. Sophomore defenseman Trevor Cosgrove (Exeter, NH/Alberni Valley Bulldogs) took a feed at the top of the zone and ripped a slap that snuck through the pads of RPI freshman goaltender Owen Savory (Cambridge, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) for his fifth goal of the season. Helpers on the power play tally went to junior Bobby McMann (Wainwright, AB/Bonnyville Pontiacs) and sophomore Nick Austin (St. Louis Park, MN/Madison Capitals).

Freshman Nick Bowman (Shelby, MI/Coulee Region Chill) drew the hosts even less than two minutes later, firing home his first collegiate goal from the left circle, after receiving a drop pass from classmate Tommy Lee (Calgary, AB/Chilliwack Chiefs). Junior Shane Bear (Calgary, AB/Brooks Bandits) earned his first assist for the Engineers on the play.

The Engineers then took a 2-1 lead at 16:02 of the first, capitalizing at the tail end of a five minutes power play opportunity. Freshman Kyle Hallbauer (Howell, NJ/Lone Star Brahmas) found himself with space to work in the high slot and stepped into a wrist shot that beat Colgate freshman netminder Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON/Brooks Bandits) for his third goal of the year.

Following a scoreless second period in which RPI held a 15-11 shot advantage, the Engineers added an insurance tally at 10:32 of the stanza. From the left point, junior blueliner Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo Clippers) found classmate Chase Zieky (Avon, CT/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) at the top of the right circle. Zieky walked and picked out the top left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Freshman Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues U20) also picked up a helper on the man advantage tally.

RPI finished 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Raiders were 1 for 3. Savory (3-9-1) had 28 saves, including 11 in each of the second and third periods. Benson (6-14-2) also turned away 28, with 15 coming in the second period alone.

The Engineers return to the ice tomorrow night, when they host 13th-ranked Cornell University (7pm). Colgate visits 18th-ranked Union College tomorrow (7pm).
