Dartmouth falls to No. 15 Cornell in road trip finale

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team dropped an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League game Saturday afternoon, 5-1, to No. 15 Cornell inside Lynah Rink.

The game was moved up to 3 p.m. due to the winter storm working its way across the Northeast.

Sophomore defender Brendan Demler sored his first career goal 3:02 into the second period for the lone Big Green (7-9-2, 6-4-1 ECAC).

The Big Red (11-5-1, 7-2-1 ECAC) got goals from five different players to secure the win and move two points ahead of Dartmouth in the league standings, 15-13, and into a tie with Quinnipiac for the top spot.

Dartmouth returns to Hanover for the first time in 2019 when it plays host to St. Lawrence on Friday night at Thompson Arena. The Green will take on Clarkson the following evening with both contests slated for 7 p.m. starts.

Connor Murphy got the scoring started with the lone goal of the first period 6:27 in, snapping Dartmouth netminder Adrian Clark's stretch of not allowing a goal at 128:54. Clark was coming off back-to-back shutouts in his last two outings after a 1-0 win at Colgate on Friday.

Demler's first in a Dartmouth sweater came 3:02 into the middle frame during a delayed penalty, finishing off good puck movement from Harrison Markell and Alex Jasiek to tie the game at 1-1.

Goals from Cam Donaldson and Mitch Vanderlaan sent the home team to the second intermission with a 3-1 lead, though, while third-period scores from Brenden Locker and Beau Starrett sealed the win. The Starrett goal came with 30 seconds left in regulation and into the empty net.

Clark finished the evening with just 14 saves as the visitors held a 23-19 edge in shots on goal in a physical game played mostly in the neutral zone. Austin McGrath stopped 22 in the Big Red's net for the win.

The two teams split the season series with each winning on home ice after the Green and White won the Nov. 30 game in Hanover, 3-2.
