RPI edged by No. 11 Northeastern in OT

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Zach Solow scored in overtime to lead the 11th-ranked Northeastern University men's hockey team to 3-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night in the Catamount Cup opener at Gutterson Fieldhouse. With the win, the Huskies improve to 11-3-1 overall, while the Engineers drop to 4-12-0.

Solow (Naples, FL/Dubuque Fighting Saints) redirected a point shot by junior defenseman Jeremy Davies (Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, PQ/Bloomington Thunder) into the net with 39 seconds remaining in overtime, breaking a 2-2 tie. The winning tally came after the Engineers tied the game in the final minute of regulation.

Trailing 2-1, RPI pulled sophomore goaltender Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) with two minute to play. The Engineers generated a handful of opportunities, before junior Will Reilly (Toronto, ON/Nanaimo Clippers) was able to backhand home the equalizing tally with 56.6 seconds on the clock. Helpers went to juniors Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) and Todd Burgess (Phoenix, AZ/Fairbanks Ice Dogs).

Sophomore Billy Jerry (River Falls, WI/Madison Capitals) turned in the first scoring chance of the game, when he hit the right pipe in the opening three minutes. Freshman Nick Bowman (Shelby, MI/Coulee Region Chill) flipped into the zone to Jerry, who rang shot off the inside of the iron. The Engineers continued to control play through the early stages of the opening frame, before breaking through for the game's first goal.

Polino potted the first marker of the contest at 7:23 of the first, taking a cross-ice feed from freshman Ture Linden (Great Falls, VA/Lone Star Brahamas) and slapping it past Northeastern senior goaltender Ryan Ruck (Coto de Caza, CA/Des Moines Buccaneers) for his team-leading fifth goal of the year. A secondary helper went to Ottoville Leppanen (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues U20).

The Huskies tied the game at 13:00 of the second, when senior Patrick Schule (Queens, NY/New Jersey Hitmen) stuck home a rebound after Davies hit the post. Schule was denied by Marshall, before he was able to flip home a second effort.

Northeastern took a 2-1 lead just 17 second into the third period on a shot by senior Liam Pecararo (Canton, MA/Waterloo Black Hawks). The lone assist was credited to Solow.

Ruck (1-0-0) finished with 31 saves, while Marshall (3-8-0) had 26 at the other end of the ice. The Huskies were 0 for 2 on the power play, with the Engineers ending up 0 for 1.

RPI is back on the ice tomorrow night, when it takes on tournament host University of Vermont (7:05pm). Northeastern duels Alabama Huntsville (4pm).
