Brown holds on to down RPI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway) and Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) both scored in the second period to lift the Brown men's hockey team over Rensselaer, 2-1, in Saturday's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown (2-6-3, 2-4-3 ECAC) earned a three-point weekend in conference play after playing No. 11 Union to a draw on Friday. RPI moved to 4-11-0, 3-5-0. Brown outshot RPI, 38-22.

Junior goalie Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 21 saves in the win, including 11 stops in the final frame. Owen Savory has 36 saves for the Engineers.

"That was a big hockey game," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "When you're going into exam break, it's nice to end on a positive. We weathered the storm in the third, but that's hockey, there are ebbs and flows, and we got the saves by Gavin when needed."

Brown outshot the Engineers by a 12-4 margin in a scoreless opening period. Brown killed the first penalty of the game near the end of the frame as Nieto made two stops during the power play.

The Bears scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second period. Weberg opened the scoring at 1:26, as he found himself in the right spot at the crease, after Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) worked the puck to the net.

Jallen followed with a breakaway goal at 4:22 for his team-high fifth tally of the season and second in as many nights.

The Engineers answered back with five minutes left in the period when Brady Wiffen tipped a shot past Nieto to cut the lead to one goal at the second intermission. Brown had 18 shots in the middle period.

Nieto made 11 saves in the final period, including several big stops to keep the Engineers off the board, highlighted by a diving grab to deny Wiffen with 4:12 remaining.

Brown was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) paced all skaters with seven shots.

After the break, Brown will take part in the Dartmouth Ledyard Classic on Dec. 29-30 in Hanover.
