Colgate Picks up Big League Win Over Princeton

Colgate Picks up Big League Win Over Princeton

HAMILTON – The Colgate men's hockey program earned a 2-1 comeback win on Friday night against No. 13/15 Princeton behind a pair of third period goals from Trevor Cosgrove and Ken Citron. With the win, the Raiders earned their first ECAC Hockey victory of the season.

It was another quiet start to the game, as the pair of team's played without finding the back of the net through the first 40:00 of action. After the two scoreless two periods, a penalty proved troublesome for the Raiders as Princeton gained a 1-0 lead just 1:14 in. After seeing no goals through the first 40:00, it took just a 42 second span for two pucks to find the net. Senior Adam Dauda's pick at the puck got past Princeton's netminder, but he was ruled in the crease and the Raiders point was pulled off the board.

Colgate's persistence powered through though, as Cosgrove tied the game just 2:19 after Princeton's initial goal for a 1-1 game. After another 10:00 span, Colgate was lifted to its first lead of the night with a tally by senior Ken Citron. The goal stood as the game-winner, as Princeton's final efforts at offensive action were stifled by a penalty in the last minutes on the clock. Freshman goaltender Mitch Benson held off the Tigers through the third period push to help lift the Raiders to the 2-1 victory.

COLGATE SCORING PLAYS
• Period 3 | 03:33 – After a shot went wide of the net from the point, Ross Craig picked it up at the goal line and quickly fed it up to Cosgrove. Ready at the top of the circle, Cosgrove's equalizer was sent to the top shelf for his first of the season.
• Period 3 | 13:37 – A turnover at the blue line was picked off by freshman Jeff Stewart, before him and the Raiders barreled down the ice towards the Princeton zone. A drop pass back to the point found the tape of Citron's stick, and was sent to the glove side and struck the twine to lift Colgate to the 2-1 lead.

COACH VAUGHAN'S TAKE
"It was a great college hockey game. Both teams really battled tonight, and their top line is so good. We talked at our pregame meeting that if we could keep them off the score sheet it would be a good first step toward winning. We did that. We had great energy all night."

"Clearly our defense was very good tonight and Mitch Benson played with a ton of confidence. Our offense came from the back end tonight as well. Our captain Ken Citron led the way, and he played a very disciplined, energetic game. We will enjoy it for a few minutes and then we have to set our sights on a great Quinnipiac team tomorrow. There are no nights off in this league."
