St. Lawrence fall behind early, lose to Mercyhurst

CANTON, N.Y. - Keenan Suthers scored his fourth goal of the season to get St. Lawrence within one goal halfway through the third period, but the Mercyhurst men's hockey team scored two goals in the next four minutes and 12 seconds to beat the Saints 4-1 in a non-conference game at Appleton Arena on Saturday night.

The Lakers scored twice in the first period to build a 2-0 lead before Suthers put away a rebound after a shot from the point by Ryan Garvey.

Dererk Barach took the energy out of the building, however, tipping in a centering pass from Wes Baker just 1:44 later to restore Mercyhurst's two-goal lead.

Matthew Whitaker put the game away with a power play goal with just over four minutes to play, scoring on a rebound after St. Lawrence goaltender Arthur Brey made a save on Derek Barach's redirect off a pass from Joseph Duszak.

Baker gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead at the 12:35 mark of the first, sending a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot into the top right corner.

Michael Bevilacqua scored the second goal in the deep slot, deflecting a shot from Dalton Henter past Brey.

Mercyhurst outshot St. Lawrence 40-19 and was 1-for-7 on the power play. The Saints were scoreless in two man-up chances.

Brey finished with 36 saves, including 15 in the first period. Mercyhurst goaltender Garrett Metcalf stopped 18 shots to earn the win.

The Saints, now 1-8 on the season, go on the road to face the University of Minnesota in a pair of non-conference games next weekend. Mercyhurst improved to 3-5-2.
