RPI Beats St. Lawrence with Late Goal

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Jacob Hayhurst recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence University, on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-4-0 overall (3-1-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Saints drop to 1-7-0 (0-2-0 ECAC Hockey).

Hayhurst (Mississauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) broke a 2-2 tie at 13:11 of the third period, when he ripped a shot home from the left faceoff dot. The power play tally, which was Hayhurst's first of the year, drew assists from freshmen blueliners Jake Johnson (Bloomington, MN/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) and Kyle Hallbauer (Howell, NJ/Lone Star Brahmas).

RPI was able to hold off a late push from the Saints, which included pulling sophomore goaltender Daniel Mannella (Woodbridge, ON/Whitby Fury) with 35 seconds remaining. The Engineers outshot SLU 9-7 in the final frame, with sophomore netminder Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) turning away all seven shots he faced.

St. Lawrence opened the scoring at 10:21 of the first period, when freshmen Kaden Pickering (Madrid, NY/Chilliwack Chiefs) and Carson Dimoff (Scottsdale, AZ/Sioux Falls Stampede) broke in on a 2-on-1. Pickering elected the shoot from the right circle and beat Marshall inside the left post for his first collegiate tally.

The Engineers tied it up at 14:04 on freshman Ottoville Leppanen's second goal of the season. Senior captain Tommy Grant (Sparta, NJ/Bay State Breakers) kept the puck in the zone at the right point, before shooting it down low for Hayhurst behind the net. Leppanen tried to stuff a shot in at the right post and the puck just squeezed over the goal line when Mannella tried to make a sprawling save.

Sophomore Keenan Suthers (Tecumsuh, ON/Dubuque Fighting Saints) gave the visitors the lead back (2-1) on a driving play up the middle of the ice. Taking a feed from Carson Gicewicz (Orchard Park, NY/Sioux Falls Stampede), Suthers flew into the offensive zone and snapped a shot under the right arm of Marshall for his third goal of the year at 17:35 of the first.

RPI drew even once again less than a minute later, as junior Jake Marrello (Slingerlands, NY/P.A.L. Jr. Islanders) corralled a loose puck at the right side of the St. Lawrence net and beat Mannella to the right post for his first of the season. Assists went to classmate Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) and TJ Samec (St. Paul, MN/Brookings Blizzard).

Marshall (3-4-0) finished with 23 saves, including 11 in the second period alone. Mannella (0-1-0) had 34 stops, with 15 coming in the second. RPI outshot the opposition (37-25) for the second straight night and went 1 for 2 on the power play. St. Lawrence was 0 for 1 on the man advantage.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they travel to Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. The Saints host Mercyhurst in a non-league game on Saturday (7pm).
