SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Rensselaer Engineers held a 4-0 lead before the Union College men's hockey team could respond, as the Dutchmen suffered a weekend sweep to RPI, losing 4-2 on Saturday night at Messa Rink.
With the loss, Union drops to 4-2-1 (0-2-0 ECACH) on the season, while RPI improves to 2-3-0 (2-0-0 ECACH). The win also gives RPI the rights over the Capital Skates trophy, winning the regular-season series for the first time since 2015.
How It Happened
After Union held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period the night before, RPI would be the team to skate into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the span of 1:10. Unlike the night before, the home team would not make a comeback in the second period, as the Engineers added two more goals to their lead.
The Dutchmen finally got on the board early in the third period. Ryan Walker swung around the net and threw the puck on net, which slipped underneath RPI netminder Linden Marshall for Walker's first foal of the season.
Later in the period, Union opted to have an extra attacker with five minutes left in the period, and the extra pressure paid off. Vas Kolias got the puck at the point and fired a shot through traffic that beat Marshall for Union's second goal.
Unfortunately, Union would be unable to score any more in the contest as RPI would claim the win and weekend sweep with the 4-2 win.
- Rensselaer blocked a total of 34 shots in the contest.
- RPI's Linden Marshall had 36 saves.
- Union was held scoreless on five power-play chances, including a five-minute major.
- Both Ryan Walker and Vas Kolias scored their first goals of the season.
