Lappin’s Late Goal Lifts Bears Over RPI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Tim Lappin (St. Charles, Ill.) scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left in regulation to send the Brown men's hockey team past Rensselaer, 2-1, in Friday night's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown (6-10-3, 5-8-0) faced a one-goal deficit at the start of the third period and scored two goals in the final frame to complete the season sweep against the Engineers. Lappin also scored the overtime game-winning goal in the first meeting of the season.

Rensselaer moves to 4-17-4 overall and 3-9-2 in the ECAC. Brown outshot the Engineers, 43-27.

Senior Tyler Bird (Andover, Mass.) also scored for the Bears. Rookie Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 27 saves in net for the win. Linden Marshall had 41 stops for the Engineers.

Brown and Rensselaer both went 0-for-1 on the power play in a scoreless first period. Brown outshot the Engineers, 14-10, in the period.

Rensselaer came out strong to start the second period, as Kania held off an early attack with three straight stops in the opening 27 seconds. Brown then killed consecutive penalties and countered with back-to-back power plays in the second half of the frame, but Marshall turned away Alec Mehr's bid in front to keep the game scoreless.

Rensselaer took the lead when Jared Wilson scored a power-play goal from the point with 35 seconds left in the second period.

Bird tied the game at 8:05 in the third period when he received a pass from Brent Beaudoin(Londonderry, N.H.) and snapped a shot that went off the skate of a defenseman and into the net.

Lappin scored the game-winning goal at 19:57. Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) collected a rebound after a shot by Alex Brink (Hamilton, N.Y.) and fired a shot from the point, before Lappin redirected the puck past Marshall for his sixth goal of the season.

Brown outshot RPI by a 43-28 margin in the third period.

Brown will host Union on Saturday night at 7 PM.
