Dartmouth Upends Engineers

TROY, N.Y. – Sophomores Shane Sellar and Will Graber combined for 11 points to lead the Dartmouth College men's hockey team to a 7-3 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Friday night at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Big Green improve to 9-12-2 overall (8-8-1 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers drop to 5-21-4 (4-12-2 ECAC Hockey).

Sellar (Carlisle, PA/Janesville Jets) finished with two goals and four assists, while Graber (Broomfield, CO/Fargo Force) collected three goals on a natural hat trick, to go along with two assists.

RPI opened the scoring at 5:50 of the first period, when freshman Jaren Burke (Ottawa, ON/Ottawa Jr. Senators) potted his first collegiate goal, with helpers going to sophomore Jake Marrello (Slingerlands, NY/PAL Jr. Islanders) and junior Jesper Ohrvall (Halmstad, Sweden/Fairbanks Ice Dogs).

???????Graber then netted the first of three straight at 9:08, knotting the score at 1-1. 9:08, knotting the score at 1-1. Picking up a loose puck in the low spot, Graber lifted a backhand shot just under the crossbar, beating RPI freshman netminder Linden Marshall (Victoria, BC/Trail Smoke Eaters) glove side.

Dartmouth took the lead for good at 11:36 on Graber's second. After dumping the puck into the offensive zone, it popped out the left side of the net to Graber, who beat Marshall to the post. Helpers went to freshman Quin Foreman (Needham, MA/West Kelowna Warriors) and Sellar.

???????Graber completed the hat trick at 4:28 of the second period, stealing the puck in left circle and sticking it past Marshall for his eighth goal of the year. The tally, which drew an assist from Sellar, made it 3-1.

???????Sellar netted the eventual game-winner at 11:41 of the second, following 37 seconds of 5-on-3 power play time. Breaking into the zone on a 2-on-1, Graber found Sellar for a one-time finish on the doorstep to extend the lead to 4-1.

Rensselaer got one back less than a minute later, as sophomore Jacob Hayhurst (Missassauga, ON/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders) jumped on a loose puck at his own blue line and skated in a partial breakaway. He moved into the left circle, before beating Dartmouth senior goaltender Devin Buffalo (Wetaskiwin, AB/Drumheller Dragons) inside the post for his ninth goal of the year, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

???????Sellar then snuck home his second of the game and eighth of the season at 18:11 of the frame. Assists were credited to Foreman and Graber once again.

The Big Green made it a 6-2 game at 7:52 of the third period, when sophomore Ryan Blankemeier (Oak Park, IL/Green Bay Gamblers) found freshman Collin Rutherford (Tonawanda, NY/Des Moines Buccaneers) for a back door tap-in at the left edge of the crease.

Sophomore Cam Strong (Billings, MT/Topeka RoadRunners) buried a 2-on-1 at 17:23 of the third to push the visitors' advantage to 7-2 and chase Marshall from the game. RPI sophomore Kyle St. Denis (Katonah, NY/Syracuse Stars) came on for the final 2:37 and stopped the only shot he faced.

RPI netted a late goal to cap the scoring, as sophomore Patrick Polino (Buffalo, NY/Lincoln Stars) stuck home a rebound from just outside the crease. Junior Meirs Moore (Duluth, MN/Victoria Grizzlies) took a shot from the left point that was stopped by Buffalo and Polino was there to net his first of the year. Freshman Billy Jerry (River Falls, WI/Madison Capitals) earned the secondary assist on the play.

Dartmouth finished 1 for 3 on the power play, while Rensselaer wound up 0 for 1. The Big Green held a 39-23 shot advantage, including 13-6 in the third period. RPI's shorthanded goal was its second in as many games, after posting just one through the first 28 games of the season.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they visit Princeton University and Quinnipiac University on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively. Dartmouth travels to Schenectady to face Union College tomorrow night. (7pm).
