Visitors Take Opener at Whale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs are down 1-0 in the best-of-three ECAC Hockey first-round playoff series. Quinnipiac erased an early deficit with five straight goals to take the series opener 5-1 before 2,672 at Ingalls Rink.

Sam Tucker, who 27 saves on the night, made 10 of those in the first and had some very challenging situations. He stopped shots with every part of his equipment as bodies were bouncing off him. His play in the Yale end enabled the Blue to take a 1-0 lead into the first break.

The Elis (15-14-1) connected on a pretty pass on the edge of the crease to grab the lead. Tyler Welsh sprinted over the visitor's blueline with Ryan Hitchcock to his left. Welsh split the defense while the captain went to the left as both ended up alone with Quinnipiac goalie Keith Peruzzelli (21 saves). Welsh held to the last moment and then flicked it over to Hitchcock for the one-timer into the vacated left side of the net with 6:28 left.

The Elis just could not sustain the offensive pressure they manufactured in the first period, finishing with 22 total shots on target while going scoreless on four power plays.

"We certainly have to play much better than we did tonight," said Keith Allain '80, Yale's Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach about game two on Saturday. "I didn't think we were good in any facet of the game, and we were second to pucks all night, that's the most important thing."

The Bulldogs created more good opportunities to score in the second, and that included three advantages. The final one was an Adam Larkin blast from the point that was saved as time expired. The Bobcats scored early in the frame to even things and then added four more, including an empty-netter, in the third period.

Ryan Hitchcock, who reached the 100-game mark last Saturday, notched his 7th goal of the year and No. 30 of his career… Sam Tucker has started all 3 games against the Hamden neighbors this season… Tickets are available for Game 2 of the series Saturday. The ticket window at Ingalls Rink opens at 5:30.
